The 367-mile-long Texas Gulf Coast is home to a variety of birds, fish, animals, plants and humans. Unfortunately, humans sometimes fail to be good stewards of the coast they share with creatures who are dependent on man to keep their habitat livable.
To raise awareness among elementary school students about the importance of keeping Texas beaches clean both for the enjoyment of humans and the protection of the region's flora and fauna, the General Land Office is again sponsoring its annual “Treasures of the Texas Coast” art contest.
Entries are now being accepted for the 2009 competition, which is open to public, private and home-schooled students in grades K-6. Ten award winners will be chosen from each of the four grade-level categories: Grades K, 1 and 2; Grades 3 and 4; Grade 5; and Grade 6. One grand prize winner will be chosen from the 40 winners.
Last year, 5,800 students entered the contest. The winners' artwork will appear in the 2009 “Treasures of the Texas Coast” calendar, which will be distributed statewide. The prize winners' entries also will be displayed at the state capitol in Austin and on the General Land Office's Adopt-A-Beach Web site: www.glo.state.tx.us/adopt-a-beach.
Two winners from Senate Dist. 25 are featured in the 2008 calendar: 6-year-old Jessica Carmichael of Dripping Springs and 10-year-old Robert Bailey of Cibolo.
Entering is both fun and educational. To ensure that their drawings accurately portray the contest's slogan, “Trashing Texas Beaches Isn't Cool,” students are encouraged to research ways in which the human factor contributes to the environmental challenges impacting the Texas coast.
Contest and entry forms are available on the Web at www.texasadoptabeach.org. To have entry forms mailed or faxed, call the Adopt-A-Beach Program's toll-free number: 877-TXCOAST (892-6278).
Entries must be postmarked by March 2. No late entries will be accepted. Artwork should be based on the theme “Treasures of the Texas Coast” and should depict why the Texas coast is special to the student. Each student may submit only one entry, which should incorporate the official Adopt-A-Beach slogan, “Trashing Texas Beaches Isn't Cool.” A parental release form must be taped to the back of the entry.
In addition to the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents and learn more about the Texas coast, students will be vying for some fabulous prizes.
The grand prize winner will receive two round-trip, coach-class tickets from Continental Airlines to any Continental destination in the 48 contiguous United States and a class party at Schlitterbahn Waterparks (New Braunfels, South Padre Island, or Galveston Island). All 40 winners will receive a ticket to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi and two all-day passes to Schlitterbahn. The grand prize winner's teacher also will receive two round-trip, coach-class tickets from Continental Airlines.
I encourage students to use their talents to remind all Texans that “Trashing Texas beaches isn't cool.”
State Sen. Jeff Wentworth (R-San Antonio) represents District 25, which includes part of Bexar County. He can be reached at jeff.wentworth@senate.state.tx.us. |
